Dennysville: Small-town comfort
Dennysville has a rich history, having been founded back in 1786 by General Benjamin Lincoln, a hero of the American Revolutionary War, with his son Theodore overseeing the settlement.
Nestled along the Dennys River, the town center flourished, powered by the rushing waters that carried timber to nearby mills and markets. For years, the lumber industry thrived, bringing prosperity to the community.
The vessel Albert Adams, built in Dennysville, was captured by Confederate forces during the Civil War in 1861.
Dennysville businesses used water in another way as well in the late 19th century, when tidal power was harnessed to support lumber mills and a grist mill along the Dennys River.
As the region’s virgin timber ran out and the main lumber mill burned down in the 1930s, the town faced changes. Still, its legacy of resilience and hard work remains a part of its story.
