Ellsworth: An area worth fighting for

The first European known to set foot in what we now call Ellsworth was André Thevet, a French explorer, back in 1556. A little later, the English explorers Martin Pring and Captain George Weymouth came by, sailing along the shores of Penobscot Bay in 1603 and 1605. Around the same time, another Frenchman, Pierre De Monts, explored parts of the coastline too.

De Monts claimed the land, parts of eastern Canada and Maine, for France in 1604 by erecting a cross and naming it Acadie, a name used for a century and a half. In 1605, Weymouth claimed the same land for England’s King James I, sparking disputes between two of Europe’s most powerful nations, and leaving Hancock County largely untouched during Maine’s early history.

During the 17th century and the first half of the 18th century, the area was caught in conflicts between the English and the French. These skirmishes, part of the French and Indian Wars, ended when the British general James Wolfe took Quebec, in 1759. The Treaty of Paris in 1763 ended the war, redrew boundaries, and made Ellsworth part of Massachusetts, which at that time included the territory that is now the state of Maine.

After the Revolutionary War, the city of Ellsworth was established and was named after Founding Father Oliver Ellsworth. The town’s location and natural resources, like water power and timber, led to lots of economic growth in the 19th century. Industries in Ellsworth included:

  • Shipbuilding
  • Brickyards
  • Sawmills
  • Carding, which prepared raw fibers for spinning so that they could be made into textiles
  • Tanneries
  • Manufacturing facilities for pottery, box-making, carriages, tools, pails and more

The 20th century brought difficulties to Ellsworth and its people. The first was the Great Flood of 1923, which destroyed many businesses along with Union River and ultimately ended Ellsworth’s shipping industry.

That was followed just a decade later by the Great Fire of 1933, which left much of the city’s commercial district on the east side of the river in ruins. However, the rebuilding led to many striking brick buildings, including the landmark Georgian Revival-style City Hall.
