All about Machias
The area where Machias is located today was first settled in the mid-18th century after people from the Scarborough area came here looking for grasses during a hay shortage.
Machias was also where the first naval battle of the Revolutionary War took place. In 1775, locals refused to provide lumber to the British military, which wanted to build barracks. The subsequent battle led to the first capture of a British naval vessel, the Margaretta. The British attempted revenge in 1777, with four ships led by Sir James Collier. They sailed into the bay, then into the Middle River, where, from the higher ground above the river, the assault was repelled, and Collier’s fleet turned tail and fled.
By the early 20th century, Machias was home to a diverse range of industries, including shipyards, an iron foundry and machine shop, grain mills, a carding mill, canned-food factories, carriage manufacturers, a sail loft, two printing presses, a towboat company, a silver mining operation and more.
Each August, the community celebrates its favorite fruit with the Machias Wild Blueberry Festival. The festival offers a delightful array of activities, from wild blueberry cooking competitions and a lively pie-eating contest to a colorful parade and arts-and-crafts exhibits. Attendees can also enjoy a blueberry-themed musical comedy that features a fresh storyline each year, and participate in the popular blueberry run/walk. For a more immersive experience, visitors have the unique opportunity of exploring the region’s wild blueberry farms.
