Penobscot: Rich in natural beauty
Long before European settlers arrived, the Abenaki-Penobscot people navigated these lands and waters, naming the area “Penobskeag” or “Penopeauke,” meaning “rocky place.”
French explorers arrived in the early 1600s. In 1759, English settlers made their home here, calling it Majorbagaduce Territory, an area that now includes Castine, Penobscot and Brooksville.
Penobscot officially became its own town in February 1787, carrying with it a rich history of those who came before.
Life in Penobscot was deeply tied to the sea, with many settlers making their living from its abundant waters through fishing, shipbuilding and trade.
The town also thrived on farming, brickmaking and the wood industry, which contributed to its early prosperity. As time went on, Penobscot expanded its industries to include knitting mills, where wool and cotton were turned into garments, and ice harvesting, which became a vital trade during colder months. The town also established a cannery that processed local seafood, helping to sustain the local economy, and even ventured into peat processing, using the area’s natural resources to create fuel.
Penobscot today remains a hardworking and close-knit community, proud of the rich history of innovation, adaptability and resilience that continues to define its character.
