How to read your propane tank’s gauge

Reading a propane gauge can sometimes be confusing. The gauge only goes to 80%, which is the maximum allowed to be stored in a tank. The last 20% of the tank is reserved for gas expansion.

Let’s walk through the steps on how to read your propane gauge.

First, we have to find the gauge! To do so, carefully open the dome on top of your propane tank. Please use extra caution in the summertime. Wasps and Hornets love to make their nests in the domes as they are warm and offer good protection from the elements.

Once the dome is open, you will notice quite a few objects. The gauge will be the only one with visible numbers. The photo to the right shows what this gauge should look like. This tank is reading at 30%. Using the chart above, you can compare what type of tank you have and find out how many gallons are remaining. Outside temperatures can play a big role in fluctuating levels. As it gets warmer, propane expands which causes your gauge to read higher.
