Propane Safety Information

R. H. Foster helps you use propane safely

propane safety

Countless households across Central and Downeast Maine rely on propane as a dependable, efficient energy source for heating, cooking, and hot water. And it’s easy to see why: propane is one of the safest and cleanest-burning fuels available. Like any energy source, though, using propane safely begins with a few simple precautions to protect your family and property.

At R. H. Foster, your safety is our priority. We live and work in the same communities we serve, and for decades we’ve helped Maine homeowners enjoy the comfort and reliability of propane. As your local energy experts, we provide trusted guidance, practical safety tips, and dependable service. Our team is here to answer your questions, share safety advice, and make sure you feel confident and comfortable using propane in your home.

Recognizing the Propane Smell

Propane is naturally odorless, so an odorant with a distinct scent is added for safety. You can identify a propane leak by its strong, unpleasant smell, which is often compared to rotten eggs, a skunk’s spray or sulfur. This odor is intentionally noticeable even in small amounts.

If you detect this smell, take it seriously. Since propane is heavier than air, the scent may be faint at first or linger in low-lying areas like basements. Trust your senses. If something smells unusual, it’s always best to be cautious.

What to Do If You Smell Propane Gas

If you smell propane, act immediately and follow these steps:

  • Evacuate the area immediately. Get everyone out and move to a safe location at least 25 feet away. Don’t waste time gathering belongings; your safety is the priority.
  • Avoid creating sparks or flames. Don’t use electrical switches, phones or any devices that could create a spark. This includes turning lights on or off, using cell phones, using a vape pen, or starting vehicles near the affected area.
  • Shut off the gas supply on your propane tank if you can do so safely.
  • Call 911 and R. H. Foster from a safe location. Don’t return to the building until a qualified professional has inspected the system and declared it safe.
